A system can also offer rich telemetry while struggling at scale. The two properties are related but not the same, and it is worth understanding which one a tool prioritizes before you commit to it for a debugging-intensive workflow.

"Delivered" tells you that the HTTP request reached the endpoint and received a 2xx response — it says nothing about what the handler did with the payload after returning 200. It does not tell you what the handler did with the payload. It does not tell you whether the handler parsed the payload correctly, executed the downstream action, or silently swallowed an exception after returning 200. From the delivery system's perspective, "delivered" is the final state. From the developer's perspective, "delivered" is the beginning of the debugging session.
Deep observability gives you the context to bridge that gap. When you have the full request payload, the full response body, the response headers, and the exact latency of each attempt, you can often identify the failure mode from the delivery record alone. A 200 response with an error message in the body tells you the handler returned success but logged a failure. A slow response with correct payload parsing points toward a timeout in a downstream service rather than a handler bug. A specific header missing from the response can indicate a middleware problem upstream of the handler.
Without that context, debugging the gap between "delivered" and "did not work" requires either reconstructing the original payload from logs, re-running the event with a fresh send, or instrumenting the handler with additional logging and waiting for the failure to recur. Questions to ask any webhook tool about observability
Before committing to a webhook tool for an observability-intensive workflow, there is a useful checklist of questions that the standard feature comparison pages often omit.
Is the full request body stored, and for how long? Some tools store only metadata — event type, status code, timestamp — and discard the payload after a short window. If you are debugging a handler failure that occurred two days ago, you need the payload from two days ago.
Is the full response body stored? A 200 response with an error string in the body is a common failure pattern. If only the status code is stored, you cannot distinguish a successful delivery from a handler that returned 200 while silently failing.
Are latency figures available per delivery? A delivery that takes 28 seconds to return 200 tells you something different from one that takes 200 milliseconds. Latency visibility helps identify timeout issues, cold start patterns, and downstream service degradation.
Are request headers stored in the delivery log? Providers send signature headers, idempotency keys, event type headers, and other metadata alongside the payload. A debugging session that lacks the original headers is missing information that is often critical.
Are there aggregate metrics — error rates, latency histograms, volume trends? Per-event observability is necessary but not sufficient. Aggregate metrics let you identify patterns — a spike in 500s at a specific time, a specific event type that consistently fails, a customer whose endpoint latency has been climbing.
